Micro-needling, also known as “collagen induction therapy” (CIT), is a minimally invasive, non surgical procedure for skin rejuvenation.

It involves the use of a micro-needling device, to create controlled micro-injuries which, in turn, stimulate the body’s natural wound healing process. The micro-injuries trigger the release of cytokines and growth factors that lead to remodelling of collagen and elastin, and also increases product penetration by 85%.

This is a fantastic treatment if you would like to address any of the following skin concerns:

Skin texture - Large pores - Acne scarring - Lines and wrinkles - Loss of volume - Dull skin - Stretch marks

You will see a plumping effect almost immediately, however the natural healing process takes time, so it can take up to 6 weeks before you see significant results.

The best results from micro-needling are seen after a course of 6 treatments spaced 2 - 4 weeks apart.

The Treatment

Prior to treatment - avoid excessive sun exposure or application of fake tan. Refrain from using retinol, glycolic or salycylic acid products, as well as waxing the area, for 1 – 2 weeks. A thorough skin consultation will be carried out, helping you understand the procedure, possible side effects, and the importance of after care. The treatment area is then cleansed and disinfected. A topical anesthetic cream is applied and left to activate for between 20 and 30 minutes. Once numb, working area by area, the numbing cream is removed, the skin disinfected and a hydrating, healing, hyaluronic acid serum is applied. Using a single use sterile roller, the skin is needled criss-cross pattern. Once the micro-needling is finished, the skin is cleansed using a gentle antiseptic cleanser, followed by an ice cold compress to soothe the treated area. A soothing hydrating serum is applied, followed by a mineral SPF 30 sunscreen. Following your DermaPure Roller treatment your skin will feel warm and will have mild redness and slight discomfort, feeling similar to mild or moderate sunburn. This may last between 24 and 48 hours. It is important to treat the skin gently and until the skin has completely recovered you should follow the recommended aftercare advice.

Is it suitable for me?

This is a fantastic treatment suitable for all skin types. Micro-needling is also a great treatment for darker Fitzpatrick skin types, as there is no risk to stimulating postinflammatory pigmentation.

This treatment is not suitable if you are pregnant, currently taking medication which makes your skin photosensitive, or if you have uncontrolled diabetes. It is also not advisable to have this treatment if you have acute acne. Alternative treatments will be advised to reduce the breakouts first. You will then be able to progress to micro-needling to treat any scarring or skin pigmentation issues.

After Care

Day 1: Possible erythema and red appearance which varies between people. Day 2: A red or pink hue persists like a moderate sunburn. Light swelling may be noticeable on waking and usually subsides as the day goes on. Day 3: Skin may still be slightly pink. The slight swelling has usually subsided. On subsequent days the skin may feel tight and dry. Your normal skincare programme can be resumed after day 3, with more active products being introduced after day 5 or when the skin has returned to normal.
Appropriate skincare will be recommended on the day of your treatment to help accelerate the healing process, protect the skin from the environment and enhance your desired results. Stop using AHA’s or Retin A for 5-7 days post treatment, or until the skin has fully recovered. Avoid touching or picking at the skin unnecessarily. Some sun sensitivity may be experienced after the treatment and therefore daily application of an SPF is important (even on cloudy or rainy days) to prevent a risk of hyperpigmentation. We recommend the DermaQuest Solar Moisturizer SPF30 or the SheerZinc SPF30. Avoid any heat treatments or vigorous exercise, direct sun exposure, sun beds, sauna and steam rooms for at least 1 week, or until the skin has fully recovered. Avoid waxing the area for one week after the treatment. The treatment may cause increased sensitivity to the skin. Side effects may include, but are not limited to stinging, itching-irritation, redness, swelling, tightness, scabbing and very mild bruising.
